Latent Variable Modelling: Old and New Approaches

چکیده

To find he precursor of contemporary latent variable modelling one must go back to the beginning of the 20th century and Charles Spearman’s invention of factor analysis. This was followed, half a century later, by latent class and latent trait analysis and, from the 1960’s onwards, by covariance structure analysis. The most recent additions to the family have been in the area of time series. We shall briefly review each of these fields in turn as a foundation for the evaluations and comparisons which we shall need to make later.

A Robust Feedforward Active Noise Control System with a Variable Step-Size FxLMS Algorithm: Designing a New Online Secondary Path Modelling Method

Several approaches have been introduced in literature for active noise control (ANC)systems. Since Filtered-x-Least Mean Square (FxLMS) algorithm appears to be the best choice as acontroller filter. Researchers tend to improve performance of ANC systems by enhancing andmodifying this algorithm. This paper proposes a new version of FxLMS algorithm. In many ANCapplications an online secondary pat...

Component-based Predictive and Exploratory Path Modeling and Multi-block Data Analysis

This discussion paper will focus on the predictive modeling of relationships between latent variables in a multi-block data framework. We will refer to component-based methods such as Partial Least Squares Path Modelling, Generalized Structured Component Analysis as well as to some of their recent variants and other alternatives. We will compare these approaches by paying particular attention t...

Latent Variable Modelling: A Survey*

Latent variable modelling has gradually become an integral part of mainstream statistics and is currently used for a multitude of applications in different subject areas. Examples of ‘traditional’ latent variable models include latent class models, item–response models, common factor models, structural equation models, mixed or random effects models and covariate measurement error models. Altho...

A Comparison of Frequentist and Bayesian Approaches to Latent Class Modelling of Susceptibility to Asthma and Patterns of Antibiotic Prescriptions in Early Life Student Poster Presentation

The assessment of patterns of antibiotic use in early life may have major implications for understanding the development of asthma. This paper compares a classical generalized latent variable modelling framework and a Bayesian machine learning approach to define latent classes of susceptibility to asthma based on patterns of antibiotic use in early life. We compare the potential advantages of e...

Probabilistic Latent-Factor Database Models

We describe a general framework for modelling probabilistic databases using factorization approaches. The framework includes tensor-based approaches which have been very successful in modelling triple-oriented databases and also includes recently developed neural network models. We consider the case that the target variable models the existence of a tuple, a continuous quantity associated with ...
